Verses about Marriage

Though society has a relaxed view on the importance of marriage, the Bible regards it as the ultimate representation of the love Christ has for His Church. Learn more about what the Scriptures say about marriage.

2 Corinthians 6:14

14 Do not be unequally yoked together with unbelievers. For what fellowship has righteousness with lawlessness? And what communion has light with darkness?

Ephesians 5:25

25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her,

Ephesians 5:33

33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

Genesis 2:18

18 And the Lord God said, “It is not good that man should be alone; I will make him a helper comparable to him.”

Matthew 19:4-6

And He answered and said to them, “Have you not read that He who made[a] them at the beginning ‘made them male and female,’[{{f}}] and said, ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’?[{{f}}] So then, they are no longer two but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

Colossians 3:18-19

18 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as is fitting in the Lord.19 Husbands, love your wives and do not be bitter toward them.

Mark 10:6-9

But from the beginning of the creation, God ‘made them male and female.’[{{f}}] ‘For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh’; [{{f}}] so then they are no longer two, but one flesh. Therefore what God has joined together, let not man separate.”

Romans 8:28

28 And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.

Ephesians 5:22-33

22 Wives, submit to your own husbands, as to the Lord. 23 For the husband is head of the wife, as also Christ is head of the church; and He is the Savior of the body. 24 Therefore, just as the church is subject to Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in everything.25 Husbands, love your wives, just as Christ also loved the church and gave Himself for her, 26 that He might sanctify and cleanse her with the washing of water by the word, 27 that He might present her to Himself a glorious church, not having spot or wrinkle or any such thing, but that she should be holy and without blemish. 28 So husbands ought to love their own wives as their own bodies; he who loves his wife loves himself. 29 For no one ever hated his own flesh, but nourishes and cherishes it, just as the Lord does the church. 30 For we are members of His body,[{{f}}] of His flesh and of His bones. 31 “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”[{{f}}] 32 This is a great mystery, but I speak concerning Christ and the church. 33 Nevertheless let each one of you in particular so love his own wife as himself, and let the wife see that she respects her husband.

1 Corinthians 7:2-11

Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband. Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband. The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does. Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control. But I say this as a concession, not as a commandment. For I wish that all men were even as I myself. But each one has his own gift from God, one in this manner and another in that. But I say to the unmarried and to the widows: It is good for them if they remain even as I am; but if they cannot exercise self-control, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.10 Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife is not to depart from her husband. 11 But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his wife.

Isaiah 62:5

For as a young man marries a virgin,So shall your sons marry you;And as the bridegroom rejoices over the bride,So shall your God rejoice over you.

Deuteronomy 24:5

“When a man has taken a new wife, he shall not go out to war or be charged with any business; he shall be free at home one year, and bring happiness to his wife whom he has taken.

Ecclesiastes 4:12

12 Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him.And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Proverbs 12:4

An excellent[{{f}}] wife is the crown of her husband,But she who causes shame is like rottenness in his bones.

Ephesians 5:31

31 “For this reason a man shall leave his father and mother and be joined to his wife, and the two shall become one flesh.”[{{f}}]

32 But I say to you that whoever divorces his wife for any reason except sexual immorality[{{f}}] causes her to commit adultery; and whoever marries a woman who is divorced commits adultery.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

Two are better than one,Because they have a good reward for their labor.10 For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls,For he has no one to help him up.11 Again, if two lie down together, they will keep warm; But how can one be warm alone?12 Though one may be overpowered by another, two can withstand him.And a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8

Love suffers long and is kind; love does not envy; love does not parade itself, is not puffed up; does not behave rudely, does not seek its own, is not provoked, thinks no evil; does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things.Love never fails. But whether there are prophecies, they will fail; whether there are tongues, they will cease; whether there is knowledge, it will vanish away.

1 Corinthians 16:14

14 Let all that you do be done with love.

John 3:16

16 For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.

1 John 4:7-8

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
